Why NBA/NAAC/ISO Consultancy?

  • Faculty in the colleges and universities have their larger focus on pure academics. Some eminent ones are research-intensive, as well. The dynamics of these institutes don’t allow enough time for faculty to immerse themselves into the accreditation system and documentation. This keeps them little informed on expectations by the NBA and is unable to do full justice.
  • The assessment and evaluation process of ‘outcome-based education’ is a bit complex in nature. Experience reveals that over 90% of institutes don’t know how to arrive at the direct, indirect assessment leading to the attainment of POs, PSOs, and ultimately PEOs. Unfortunately, the NBA accreditation documents don’t provide end-to-end solutions. They leave it for Institutes to devise it. Our consultants have complete mastery over it…
  • “First-Year” documentation of Outcome-based education in UG Engineering is inadequately explained in the NBA SSR. It leaves institutes in confusion for a lack of complete clarity on the attainment of PEOs, POs, and PSOs.
  • There is no suggested format by NBA for the ‘Indirect Assessment’. Institutes need to establish a well-thought-out system that is fully justifiable. It needs an expert’s input.
  • Institutes might or might not have the NBA mandated policies for the desired initiatives/process. In some cases, a policy might simply not meet all the required aspects. In other cases, the implementation and impact analysis could be missing.
  • The implementation of the outcome-based system must ultimately result in the improvement of curriculum, academic and physical support systems, enhanced hard outcomes, and better governance of the institute. We don’t find even 5% of institutes undertaking this essential exercise of outcome-based-education which in fact is the true outcome of the system.

National Board of Accreditation (NBA):

NBA was established by AICTE in 1994 and became an independent body in 2010 and 2014 India has become a permanent signatory to the Washington Accord (WA) which recognizes the global equivalence of engineering degrees.

NBA accredited Tier I engineering institutions degrees are now valid in 20 nations. NAAC certifies institutions whereas NBA accredits the programs run by the institutions. NBA is more specific in that it expects that the graduating engineers should have the graduate attributes as defined in the Washington accord. An institution may have a mix of excellent programs as well as some average programs. And students are unable to differentiate between the departments if the institute is accredited by NAAC but the NBA accredited program means that the said program meets all the ten criteria’s and this is very specific.

Accreditation granted by NBA qualifies the  institution for benefits from AICTE like – Variation in intake Introduction of new courses

Eligibility to apply for AICTE funds –  MODROBS, TAPTEC, R&D, and others

Eligibility to apply for research projects  funded by various government organizations like –   DRDO, DST, CSIR, DNES, and others

Accreditation granted by NBA helps the institution to approach UGC and apply for –

  • Autonomous college status
  • Deemed university status
  • Inclusion under section 2(f) for funds from UGC
  • Inclusion under section 12(B) for Central government funds
  • Funds for NAAC sponsored seminars on specific topics.

National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC)

NAAC was established in 1994 as an autonomous institution of the University Grants Commission (UGC). NAAC as of Dec 2014 has accredited 192 universities and 5627 colleges in India. NAAC methodology for Assessment and Accreditation (A&A) is very much similar to that followed by Quality Assurance agencies across the world and consists of self-assessment by the institution and external peer assessment by NAAC.

Criteria and key aspects for assessment

The criteria-based assessment of NAAC forms the backbone of the assessment and accreditation (A&A). Seven criteria are formulated to represent the core functions and activities of an institution.

They focus on the issues which have a direct impact on teaching-learning processes, research, community development, and the development of the students. The seven criteria to serve as the basis for assessment of HEIs are:

  1. Curricular Aspects.
  2. Teaching-Learning and Evaluation.
  3. Research, Consultancy, and Extension.
  4. Infrastructure and Learning Resources.
  5. Student Support and Progression.
  6. Governance, Leadership, and Management.
  7. Innovations and Best Practices.
